New Zealand Chinese Language Week will be held from 17 to 23 September. This is a popular event on our school calendar especially when it comes to delicious dumplings which feature this year.
Chinese Language Week is a Kiwi-driven initiative launched in 2014 designed to increase Chinese language learning in New Zealand. This initiative seeks to bridge the cultural and linguistic knowledge gap by delivering fun and practical initiatives that assist Kiwis to learn Chinese. More online resources can be found here: https://www.nzclw.com/resourcesTo celebrate New Zealand Chinese Language Week, students from Y9 Chinese class have completed a research project about China and Chinese culture, and they have done wonderful work! Dumpling Day is the perfect way to celebrate New Zealand Chinese Language Week this year.
The day falls on the 26 September, aligning with International Dumpling Day. The first dumpling recipe originated in 200AD, and is mentioned in the ‘Apicius’, a collection of Roman cookery recipes thought to have been compiled in the fifth century AD.But long before the Romans - dumplings were created in China to cure frostbite during a harsh winter. Ancient Chinese medical belief stated that consuming food shaped like the affected area was a treatment, hence jiao zi (dumplings) were shaped like ears.
The term 'dumpling’ was coined in the 1600s and has a Germanic origin, referring to the consistency of dough. Dumplings have developed all over the world, independently of Roman and Chinese origins.

The theme for 2023, is Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori - making the language stronger! This is an essential piece of the puzzle to achieve the goal of one million speakers of Te Reo Māori in 2040.
Māori Language MomentJoin us this Thursday 14 September 12pm, 2023, for our annual Māori Language Moment. This marks the very moment the Māori Language Petition was presented to Parliament in 1972, on the first Māori Language Day. Three years later, it became what we now know as Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Stop whatever you may be doing at 12.00 pm and do it in Te Reo Māori. Plan for this occasion, and make it a special moment. There are several resources that can support you and increase your confidence and ability to speak Te Reo Maori. You can find some here: |
This week Auckland City and Lynfield College welcomed the mayor of Shinagawa City, Japan to commemorate and extend our 30 years of sister city friendship and student exchanges.
On Monday 4 September the sister city agreement was reconfirmed at a powhiri and signing ceremony at Auckland Council.
The following day the Shinagawa mayoral delegation was warmly welcomed to Lynfield College by a rousing powhiri that our visitors said stirred their hearts. Principal Cath Knell then took the delegation on a tour of the College to see where the Shinagawa students studied during their visit. The visit ended with a delicious lunch prepared by our Hospitality students.
We look forward to welcoming a new group of Shinagawa students to Lynfield College in 2024.

The theme for Uike Lea Faka-Tonga 2023 is 'E tu'uloa 'a e Lea faka-Tongá 'o ka lea'aki 'i 'api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-'a-kāingá, which means the Tongan Language will be sustainable if used at home, church and in the wider community.
The word TU’ULOA in the theme has a positive and progressive connotation and means to continuously grow, nurture, and sustain a valued idea, practice, event, or memory in an enduring way.
This year's theme focused on the importance of using lea faka-Tonga. It impressed on us the need not only to understand lea Faka-Tonga, but to also use it as much as possible at home, church and wider community. When you are proud of your language and can speak it, you will also be more grounded in your identity as a Tongan.
