Our annual Lynfield College Valentines Celebrations provided opportunities for the purchase of cards and chocolate to be delivered to friends plus fun photo opportunities. Money raised will be donated to support families and communities affected by the recent floods. Students and staff also donated non perished goods for these communities.
The New Zealand VEX Robotics National Championships were held over the weekend of the 18 and 19 of February at the Due Drop Events Centre (formally Vodafone Events Centre) in Manukau. It was a fantastic weekend of competition and teams were judged for several different awards and well as the competition tournament itself. Sixty-eight High School teams and four University teams from all over New Zealand competed for seven High School and two University qualifying spots to compete at the World Championships in Dallas Texas from the 25 to 27 of April.
This year Lynfield College had two teams qualify for Worlds, 2915U won the Design Award and 2915B through their Robot Skills score. We expect to have 10 students and one or two teachers travelling to Dallas to compete in the World Championships in just over eight weeks time.
With the timeframe being so tight, we won’t have the opportunity to do much fundraising, so we will be relying on sponsorship to enable the students to participate in this fantastic opportunity. We would like to ask that businesses in our community please consider sponsoring our students, so they are able to compete at Worlds. We estimate that the cost per student will be about $6000 each, including flights, accommodation, airport transfers and local transport to and from the event.
In return for your sponsorship, we would proudly wear your company logo/name on our team shirts at Worlds and local scrimmages this year. We will happily bring our robots to businesses to demonstrate them to you and your staff. This visit to your company would happen in the first weeks of July, in school holidays as the teams are currently modifying or rebuilding in preparation for Worlds. You would also be acknowledged in this school newsletter.
This is an amazing opportunity for our students, however the only way that we can make the most of this opportunity is by the gracious generosity of our community’s businesses. Please consider making this trip to compete at the World Championships a reality for your students. If you would like to know more or are keen to sponsor our students, please contact me cyearbury@lynfield.school.nz

On the afternoon of Thursday 23 February, all Year 13's gathered in the Hall to celebrate our Student Leaders receiving their Leadership Badges.
Sitaita Latuila and Tom Tuipolutu opened the Assembly with a special welcome. The Pacific Pride and Young Māori leaders were the first on stage followed by the House Captains. We were very lucky to have Michael Howell (Head Student 2019) as guest speaker. He was inspiring and motivating and certainly made us think when he advised us to always ‘expect the unexpected’. Next up was the Year 12 Executive team, followed by the senior portfolio holders.
The Assembly ended with Head Student Leaders Han Xie, Fran Walsh and Neel Kumar congratulating the team and recognising them for their abilities. The 2023 Student Leaders make up a strong group of individuals who will work with focus to leave a legacy of engagement and inclusion. We have welcomed a new cohort of international students to Lynfield College this term, from Japan, China, Argentina, Italy and Thailand. We hope all our students create amazing memories which they can take back home with them, and we wish all the best for our students starting on their NCEA pathway.
