Te Kuhunga Meredith Connell Visit

Phase 2 of the 2022 Te Kuhunga Law in Schools programme took place on Wednesday 31 August, with a group of senior students visiting the newly built Meredith Connell office in the CBD. Our students were welcomed by the Associate Director of the People and Capability team, then inspired with stories of recent cases and interesting legal topics by two panels of Partners as well as young Solicitors. The tour of the new premises gave students a real feel of what it would be like to work in a corporate environment. The mock Court Room set up within the building allowed students to experience role playing in the different areas. Students are eagerly registering for the Te Kuhunga Law Open Day on Saturday 24 September, when the two Auckland Law schools come together offering lectures, workshops and a chance to work on some mini moots. |

NZSS Tournament Week Update
FRIDAY
FOOTBALL BOYS in Whangarei played Green Bay and lost 2-1. Our team has finished 12th out of 23.HOCKEY BOYS in Hamilton played a great game this morning and were narrowly defeated 3-2 having given it everything. They finished 12th out of 15.

HOCKEY GIRLS also in Hamilton have grown enormously and have finished 13th out of 13. Team management is very proud of the players and say this definitely is not a reflection of the commitment to their games.
NETBALL GIRLS at Howick went down to St Cuthberts this morning and play their final game at 2.30 pm v Tauranga Girls who they defeated by 4 yesterday. They are playing for 23rd and 24th in the A grade.
FOOTBALL GIRLS battled it out in the final of their tournament at Whenuapai today and came 2nd in the Kathy Seaward Tournament. Congratulations! 'A just reward for some very, very hard work on and off the field' from Ms Walbran.

THURSDAY
NETBALL GIRLS: We beat Mt Maunganui 31-29 yesterday and it was sweet revenge as we lost to them when they were here for the Exchange. Netball girls have now secured an A-Grade spot for 2023!! Well Done!!
FOOTBALL GIRLS
The girls just beat Carmel 1-0 to win a place in the FINALS!! Finals tomorrow at 1.00 pm for 1st/2nd placing. There are no injuries. The girls are super focused and ready for battle!! GO GIRLS!!
They beat Onehunga yesterday and are now ONE win from the final! They are now playing Carmel (10.30 am game). Best of luck to them 😊

Sadly the boys lost 0-4 this morning.
HOCKEY GIRLS
They drew 2-2 against Papamoa yesterday but Tournament organisers made a mistake when they said they did not need a winner/loser in that game. This morning they had to do a penalty shootout @ 8.00 am but sadly lost in the shootout!! Their next game is at 5.30 pm today.
North Island Secondary School Curling Champions
First success of the Tournament Week goes to our boys curling team, who are North Island champions!
The team of William Day Year 10, Stanley Long Year 13, Evan Huang Year 11 and Austin Lamb Year 9 competed in a tough five game series against MAGS over two days at Paradice Ice Rink, Avondale. Their final game was a convincing 8-1 win, leading to a 3.5 - 1.5 overall win.
Our boys coped admirably with the variable ice conditions and developed a strong tactical game. They were also great ambassadors for the 'Spirit of Curling'.
Lynfield currently has three teams competing in the Thursday night competition, and it's great to see a large number of junior students participating.

NIWA Auckland Science and Technology Fair
Held from 25 - 27 August, the NIWA Auckland Science and Technology Fair is an annual event that celebrates the excellence in scientific and technological investigations carried out by Auckland City Year 7 to Year 13 students.
Science helps find answers to questions we have about the physical world around us. Technology uses those discoveries to solve problems and improve lives. This Fair is about encouraging young people towards problem solving and creative discovery. This builds both the students abilities and our countries responsiveness to a wide variety of future challenges.Congratulations to our students for their participation and projects.

Live Music Concert
Thursday 25 August saw the return of live music in the Lynfield College Hall from our talented groups. The first half of the concert saw performances by the Concert Band, Trio Songnando, and the Chamber Orchestra all of which were well received by the audience. A quick reset of the stage during the intermission made way for the Jazz Combo, Funk Group, Stage Band and Big Band to perform in the second half. There were stand out performances from students throughout the night, with a particularly cool moment for Sebastian Jackson (Year 12) with the Jazz Combo performing his original piece ‘JAZZ!’ in front of a crowd for the first time.
Huge thanks go to the team that helped put all of this together, and the students for persevering through such a disrupted year! We all look forward to performing for you again soon!The full program of music was:

Daffodil Day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer.
Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For over 30 years New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day and they need your help again this year.
Whether it's driving someone to their treatment, providing advice to someone who has rung our 0800 number, or sitting with them during their treatment - the Cancer Society is there. But they can't do this without your help.
Every dollar raised for Daffodil Day will go towards cancer care for patients and their whānau, education and awareness programmes, and life-saving cancer research.
Ever Heard of Air Cadets?
If not, New Zealand Air Cadets is a volunteer youth organisation that upholds the vision of preparing successful leaders of tomorrow. Sometimes known as New Zealand’s best kept secret, air cadets are given the opportunity to fly planes, go shooting, tramping, running, learn first aid, navigation and radio telephone procedures. Alongside outdoor pursuits, young teenagers in the cadet force are taught a wide variety of leadership skills, organisational skills, discipline, and confidence.

Central Auckland Squadrons are now facing an undecided future. The 20-year lease for the building used for weekly parade nights, camps and other cadet activities is about to expire. Over the past year both squadrons have tried finding land to continue parading on. However, this has not been easy. They are reaching out to our communities pleading for a place to lease. Blood Collection Day
On Friday 26 August, Lynfield College is having our annual Blood Collection day in the Hall. We have been unable to do this for a couple of years due to Covid and so it is great to be able to offer this to staff and students again in 2022.
If you are eligible then please consider donating. 83 Kiwis a day need lifesaving blood or plasma so every drop you donate counts.
In order to donate you must be:
- Over 16
- At least 50kg
- Not had a tattoo or piercing in the last six months
- Be in relative good health (don’t be put off though, a nurse will interview before you start)
Students will still need to book an appointment and can do so using the NZ Blood service app. Info is on Schoology and our student leaders have been promoting over the last two weeks (info attached).

Studying Business and/or Law
With an increasing amount of interest from students in Business and Law programmes, three University of Waikato staff came to present to our senior students on Thursday 25 August. Students learnt about Management Studies, Business, Communication and Climate Change Degrees.
Year 13 students were very excited to hear that a Waikato OE programme is a fantastic way to experience other cultures through a Global Internship or a Student Exchange. Waikato Management School is currently ranked #1 in NZ for Business and Economics and in the top 1% of Business Schools globally.
All degrees at Waikato have a compulsory work-integrated learning component to develop key skills and gain experience. Unlike the other Law School’s across New Zealand, students do not have to enrol in conjoint degrees to study Law. Our students learnt about the core principles of professionalism, biculturalism and the study of law in context.

Shinagawa Zoom Exchange
Lynfield College Kapa Haka welcomed akonga from Shinagawa with a live version of our school haka 'Whakarongo Mai ra', Year 10 student Danyon Varney delivered a korero and our school waiata was sung. Shinagawa said a speech and also sung a waiata. During a separate session Shinagawa were shown poi, korowai, taiaha, patu and Maori costumes. They also learned the basics of our haka performing actions.
There were seven International students participating in the international sessions, all from different nationalities: China, German, France, Korea, Luxembourg, Spain and Vietnam.
At first some were a little shy, but they asked lots of questions and shared interesting facts and snippets. At their second session our International students took Shinagawa students on a virtual tour of Lynfield College. By this time, they were much chattier – the session ended for them too soon!
We hope to see Shinagawa visit in person next year!

Winners! 2nd XI Boys Football Senior B North West Plate
On Saturday 13 August the two giants of the North West Plate Football division (Lynfield College and Kingsway College) played off in the grand final to decide the league champions. Kingsway scored the opening goal after their striker houdini’d their way through the Lynfield defence. Thankfully, this didn’t last long as Leroy Coburn immediately struck a 30 metre screamer into the top corner before also smashing home from close range to put Lynfield 2-1 up.
Jacob Cowen then calmly stroked the ball into the corner just before half-time to have the hosts 3-1 up. In the second stanza Lynfield parked the bus to hold on to their 3-1 lead and withstood wave after wave of Kingsway attacks. In particular Ammar Abdurrahman and MOTM Lucas Lockhart being standouts. With three minutes to go, Arlyn Millar scored a Fernando Torres-esque breakaway to allow the celebrations to begin with Lynfield wrapping up the game 4-1.
The side line was pandemonium, and the manager Corey Walters was barely able to hold back his tears as Lynfield College walked away as deserved North West Plate Champions.

Mt Maunganui Exchange 2022
The annual Lynfield / Mt Maunganui sports exchange took place at Mt Maunganui on Thursday 11 August.
This is the 64th year this exchange has been a highlight on the sporting calendars of both schools. The top teams in six codes competed for the overall trophy based on the number of games won and lost. Most games were played at Lynfield College although hockey was held at facilities off site. There is always intense rivalry … and a lot of fun.
This year Mt Maunganui won the overall trophy and the LynMount trophy for rugby. Congratulations to our students for their fantastic sportsmanship. They were in every sense one big Lynfield team who had an awesome sports day they will remember for many years.
The results were definitely not what we were hoping for BUT most were good, very close games.

Pizza Post-PISA
On August 10 approximately 60 of our students participated in the International PISA testing. Ministry of Education supervisors were very impressed with the focus and self-management our students displayed on the day.
The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in member and non-member nations intended to evaluate educational systems by measuring 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading.
After three and half hours of testing, everyone enjoyed a shared lunch of pizza. Many thanks to Mr Shah, owner of Domino’s Pizzas in Lynfield for his support.
Students will be receiving a certificate for their participation.

KBB Music Festival 2022: 8 - 12 August
The Lynfield College Chamber Orchestra and Big Band both competed at the KBB Music Festival this week, with the support of their teachers Mr Sue, and Mr Isdale. After a tricky start to the year it was fantastic to see these groups back on the stage, and representing the school!
The Chamber Orchestra Performed four songs, starting with ‘Ahrirang’ (a traditional Korean folk song), before moving to the Gavotte and Pizzicato from ‘Simple Suite’, excerpts from ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’, and finishing with ‘Tango Mariana’. A particularly beautiful performance of Ahrirang was the standout, being skilfully led by Daisy Chen (Y11) on First Violin, and it was very well received by the audience and adjudicators.
The Big Band also performed four songs, starting with ‘On Green Dolphin Street’, followed by the vocal chart ‘All of Me’ Featuring John Mahe (Y10), ‘Body and Soul’ featuring Glen Fetuani (Y13) on Alto Saxophone, and finishing with the funk chart ‘State Terrorism’. Again the students performed exceptionally well, but particular mentions go to Glen Fetuani for an incredible performance of ‘Body and Soul’ and Simone Hidalgo on Piano for her intro solo for ‘On Green Dolphin Street’.

Talanoa and Hui Whānau Evening
On Thursday 4 August the Young Māori and Pacific Pride leaders hosted our first combined Hui Whānau/Talanoa here at Lynfield College for 2022.
It was a special and significant night for us as leaders but also our students, staff and the wider community. The evening began with performances from our talented Kapa Haka group through to our gifted Samoan and Tongan group.
We were fortunate enough to introduce our new staff and Leaders to our families who attended. Our Tumuaki Ms Knell and Faculty Leader, Student Services Mrs Wells addressed our community and we ended with a shared meal in the staff room which was a great way to finish the evening.
We would like to recognise our families and staff who were able to make the evening and those who supported us behind the scenes. We look forward to seeing you all in week 4 and week 5 for our upcoming Parent Student Teacher meetings. Until then, noho ora mai rā.

Westpac ShadowTech 2022 Programme
Westpac hosted the ShadowTech 2022 programme delivered by NZTech with the Ministry of Education on Thursday 4 August. Senior students attending were exposed to a line-up of speakers and panellists showcasing their experiences across technology and banking.
Students heard how to navigate their pathway into the technology sector or the banking industry, either applying for an Internship straight from school or qualifying at a Tertiary Institute first. Customer Experience Design, Software Engineering and Technology were the themes with many eye-opening takeaways from the day for the students.

NZ Engineering Science Competition 2022
The 2022 competition was held on Saturday 6 August in school. The question was posted online at 10 am and students had to compile a comprehensive report and email it to the organisers by the 6 pm deadline. This annual competition is a problem solving event for teams of three to four secondary students, organised by the Department of Engineering Science at University of Auckland.
2022 Question: What is the largest payload that can be launched into space by slingshot?
The question is meant to be open ended so to encourage critical thinking, use of a multitude of problems solving skills and mathematical modelling to support the teams’ argument.
| This year, we had five teams in total, consisting of students from years 11 - 13. The judges (comprised of PhD students and lecturers) at the university are now going through hundreds of reports and the results of the competition would be released early next term. School Board Triennial Election 2022
We have received ten nominations for our School Board. An evening for prospective candidates to speak to voters will be on Tuesday 23 August from 5.30 - 6.30 pm in the Staffroom.

From the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombo - great news of a new personal best of 54.04 for Mia Powell who is now through to the semi-finals. These are expected to take place at 10.00 am this morning (New Zealand time).

Celebrating Cook Islands Week
Ei Katu
Ei Katu is made and worn by both males and females as a symbol of love and belonging. It is a circle, meaning everything is connected. It is an essential piece of traditional Cook Island culture.
Ei, in Cook Island Maori translates to necklace, garland, wreath, chaplet or scarf. It is most commonly used to describe a flower garland, either worn on the head or around the neck. It is customary to greet your family or friends arriving on the island with an ei kaki, made from tiare teina (Gardenia taitensis). In many celebrations and at special events, or even to wear casually, men and women alike adorn ei katu.
A workshop was held on Friday 5 August for students to make their own Ei Katu. Below are some photos of these beautiful works of art.

Happy Cook Island Language week! This year the theme for the week is “Epetoma o te reo Maori Kuki Airani is Atuitui’ia au ki te Oneone o toku Ui Tupuna”, which means connect me to the soil of my ancestors.
One way that we can support this is by using everyday phrases when you can. Please see the attached Language cards for your perusal. Challenge yourself and maybe set yourself a goal of using a number of phrases a day!!
