Targeting Tokyo: Maddi Wesche

Maddi Wesche (Lynfield student 2013 - 2017), grew up watching all sports at the Olympic Games, but it was the sport of shot put that she excelled in. She competes in the World Champs in Doha this week and is doing all she can to one day wear the fern at the Olympic Games.

Germany Exchange 2019

22 students and three teachers travelled to beautiful Werder in Germany from 21 September to the 16th of October. Hosted by the Ernst-Haeckel-Gymnasium Werder our students will visit several historic places in Berlin, Potsdam and Bavaria. This is the eight time a group from Lynfield has visited Germany.

JCS International Young Creatives Emmy Award

Dear Everyone,

All of our team have been at work the last four months on a small project for a very prestigious film festival in New York, the JCS International Young Creatives Emmy Award.The festival was designed by JCS International to encourage creativity from emerging filmmakers around the world while creating a global conversation around a range of different aspects around Peace.

The theme of the festival this year is ‘Stand Up For Peace’. This statement can be interpreted in a number of different ways. We chose to create a film on an aspect of peace that hits close to home for all audiences. To be at peace with one's spirit.

'A Peace Of Mind' follows the story of a little boy, who finds himself not at peace with himself due to the pressures of being in a world that he feels does not care for him. The story shows us that peace is something that is not just physical, but something spiritual and is something to embrace and promote in all points of the compass.

This story is to communicate the importance of standing up for one's inner peace. We've just entered our film in and are so excited to say that it has been accepted through to the voting round of judging. You can find the film as well as the voting page at the JCS international young creatives award page on the international Emmys website. On behalf of all our cast and crew, we hope that our little story moves you all to support our film and vote!

Once the Online Public Voting has closed, the twenty (20) videos with the most votes on the judging portal will move on to the Final Round of Judging which will take place September 26 in New York City.

ASD Grand Finals and Prizegiving 2019

Kyus Rodger and Joseph Hisayasu received the Impromptu Cup award at the Auckland Schools Debating Grand Finals and Prizegiving hosted by Auckland Grammar School on Wednesday 11 September.

Lynfield College also received three Top 10 Speaker Awards across two grades:

ADVANCED PREMIER: Joseph Hisayasu (5th)

PREMIER JUNIOR: Jasmine Pickston (9th) and Michael Jury (6th)

A special thanks to Catherine Barker for attending the prizegiving and her tremendous help with hosting the Advanced Open Grand final, including set up, clean up and just being the wonderful person she is!

Debating: Advanced Open Grand Final

Lynfield hosted the Advanced Open Grandfinal on the evening of Tuesday 10 September in the Library.

Debaters Sarah Young (Y13), Kendall D'Souza (Y12), Joseph Hisayasu (Y13) and Aashish Ramanlal (Y11) of AO1 took on a Year 12 St Dominic's team (a true Western Zone final!).

It was an excellent debate in front of a good-sized crowd. The moot was "This House would publish the salaries of all New Zealanders" - which proved challenging. St Dominic's affirmed and Lynfield negated.

Ex-Lynfield student Karan Kalsi was the convenor of the grade and also chaired the debate. Unfortunately, the panel of three judges awarded the debate to St Dominic's in a 2-1 split decision.

Still an excellent result for the team to take 2nd Place in the 2nd Grade in Auckland.

Mālō e lelei! Tonga Language Week

Our Tongan students shared their language, knowledge and cultural pride with a range of events throughout the week.

The week started with a presentation at staff briefing by Rosalyn Fononga to introduce greetings and plans for the week's activities. Presentations were also made at all year level assemblies. Tongan students (and staff too), were able to wear a 'kiekie' or a Ta'ovala' over their uniform during the week. Sharing a 'word for the day' on Schoology, and everyone enjoyed the Tongan food, especially the Pineapple Pie!

NZSS Winter Tournament Week

What a fantastic time our athletes had at NZSS Winter Tournament Week! Every one of our players represented our school with pride and determination to give their best 100% of the time they were on the field / court / turf / ice. Every one of our teams learned so much - about their skill sets, game play and themselves.

Very special thanks to all the coaches and other adults involved. Without these dedicated people our teams would never have had this experience.

And let's not forget the supporters who travelled 100's of km in some cases, to watch and support from the sideline ... thank you, your support is greatly appreciated, as are your photographs.
