TRASH TO FASHION
Trash to Fashion students had fun creating a variety of garments using a range of techniques and upcycled materials, selected from the Birkenhead Recycling Centre. Themes were Aotearoa, Geometric Abstraction, Avant Garde and Crazy Creatures. All students/groups modelled their fabulous garments down the catwalk in front of their peers.
POWLEY HOUSE: A CHRISTMAS CONNECTION
Last week a group of students came to our village to decorate the Christmas tree and returned on Thursday to sing and dance. What a delightful group. They came in with trepidation on Monday and left on Thursday with smiles. We loved them. I think they realised that we weren’t that scary and not all gaga!
As an ex-teacher it was lovely talking to their young teacher who is so enthusiastic about her job and it certainly showed up in her relationship with her students. Thank you. You were wonderful

DIPPING INTO CULTURE WITH LEARNING SUPPORT
For Wa Hono week, the staff in Learning Support prepared activities for a 'Dipping into Culture' project featuring France, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Italy. Mask-making, jewellery-making, dancing, henna, facts with quizzes, cooking and even orienteering activities were included.
Three students, Shehar Bano, Sariyah Mansuri and Selvi Prajapati, showed the Lynfield value of Hinengaro wawata by creating their own set of activities for the Friday, featuring Japan. It was an ambitious and successful initiative by these students and an enjoyable week for all participants.
BotArt by ROBOTICS
During Wa Hono weekend, students explored programmable robotic artwork and traditional techniques, creating stunning masterpieces, two of which were sold on Trade Me. Led by Mr Bryan, Ms van Heeswijk, Mr Waddington, and Mr Wright, the course concluded with a thrilling Amazing Race, showcasing an engaging and collaborative experience.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
The Guardians of the Galaxy students are our future leaders who will be responsible for the kaitiakitanga of our environment, animals, and people. By adopting the principal of manaakitanga in our mahi all week, that included gardening, picking up rubbish, walks to beaches and parks, presentation from a bird rescue organisation, making kawakawa balm and weaving kete (bags), ending with a shared kai hakari/feast with our buddy group Rangatahi in the Community.
TAWHARANUI CAMP
Wā Hono Camp was an incredibly fun and enjoyable experience. Participants were divided into groups, and each group was responsible for organising and running their own activities, which fostered teamwork and leadership skills.
In addition to planning activities, they also took on the responsibility of cooking all their meals, which added an element of independence and collaboration with each other. It was a great opportunity for everyone to learn new skills while having a fantastic time together.
LIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCES
We had a great time putting together multiple live performances last week. We had the pleasure of going to Glenavon School and Waikowhai Intermediate on Thursday before performing in front of our new C Block building on Friday Lunchtime. A great way to finish the Wā Hono Week.
