Year 10 Soft Materials students have worked in groups or individually to design, make and cost a product. Their hard work culminated in their presenting their products in an Expo during a lunchtime last week.
Staff and students were invited to view and vote for their favourite and the winners are..... Michelle Huang and Angel Chan!! - for their fabulous bread and donut cushions .
Second place went to Setta Kaisala and Etu Thompson Schwenke for their Lynfield School reversible bucket hat and third prize went to Akanesi Vea for her cute smiley face emoji t-skirt.

Every year the year 9 Soft Materials classes design and make quilts for a charity. In terms 3 and 4 students worked in groups to design a quilt for ‘Foster Hope’ a New Zealand organisation that helps children and young people going in to foster homes by providing them with individual packs .
Students felt passionate about this cause and worked really hard to create colourful quilts to help easy a difficult situation for many children.
The photos are a selection of some of the quilts made.
Lynfield staff, particularly Mrs Townsend and Mr Davis are extremely proud of the hard work and skills displayed by their students at the NZChefs Secondary Schools' Competition.
First there were 19 medals in the Regional competition and then, not daunted by competing at the National level, Lynfield students excelled again. There is excitement when competing against other students but when the pressure is on only the best complete their entries within time and with the quality required.
Congratulations! to the following students:

Year 11 Fashion and Design students recently went to Sew Tec Fashion Academy in New Lynn for an insight into the industry and also for an opportunity to learn from the tutors there. Students were taught to how to manipulate darts and to gather sleeves into a bodice pattern. These garments will adapted to complement the Inspired Design skirts that they have made in Term 2 and will be modelled in the Technology Fashion show on Thursday 22 September. |
On Thursday 16 th June our Year 12 and Year 13 Fashion and Design students visited High Society Ltd. High Society is a New Zealand company that produces and manufactures all their garments in New Zealand with a focus on ethical fashion. The purpose of the visit was to provide our students with the opportunity to see a diverse range of career pathways and how the skills they are learning at school can be used in the Fashion Industry. Students saw the different departments and the designers, patternmakers, sample cutters, machinists through to the production and floor staff and were interested in the many roles and positions of all the people involved in making this process happen. Students were told about the highs and lows of what is involved in working in the fashion industry. |
It is not by chance that the VEX robotics competition has grown to be the world’s biggest robotics competition! The passion and dedication that the competition generates in the students and anyone involved in the programme is evident by the excitement shown in the 1072 teams that competed in Louisville, USA, last weekend for the right to call themselves World Champions
Huge congratulations to our students - Lynfield College achieved the ultimate accolade being crowned the winners of the High School Excellence Award. They join an elite group of teams who number only nine who can call themselves the best of the best.
The recipient of the Excellence Award "exemplifies overall excellence in building a well-rounded VEX robotics program. They excel in many areas and are a shining example of dedication, devotion, hard work and teamwork. They are strong contenders in numerous award categories, and deserve to be recognized for building quality robots and a "team" committed to quality in everything that they do. To be eligible for the Excellence Award at the World Championship, they must have submitted at least two different online challenges in the current year and must also sign up for both an Excellence Award interview and Design Award submissions."
Due to the amazing and dedicated efforts of the senior students along with the support of the junior members in the Lynfield College Robotics Group all of these criteria were meet to a high standard. An example is the online website design challenge in which our www.lcrobotics.nz website was placed 2nd in the world. Our promotional video also made it to the top 10 finalists.
Lynfield College also won the Robot Skills World Champions Award for the highest score in the world in a competition where the robot competes alone on the field under driver control for one minute. Scoring 454 points equates to getting two balls into a net with an opening roughly half the size of a netball hoop 15 feet away every second! All of this was done using a robot built and programmed by our students and their next closest rival was 23 points behind them. The Guinness Book of World Records has formally recognized the VEX World Championships as the biggest in the world, and for anyone who needs convincing that VEX Robotics is a sport America’s premier sports channel ESPN will be airing #VEXWorlds on ESPN2 on July 20th |
